American Farmhouse

The typical Farmhouse architecture via oldhouseweb

When we came to this new land to establish a new country we started out as an agrarian society. Our influences were of course what we knew best.  Scandinavia and Germany heavily weighed in on the architecture.  The homes were sturdy and built to last yet simple.

Today’s American Farmhouse Defined

Many of us remember a simpler time and long for them again.  We want our homes to reflect the love and freedom we once felt.  I think that is why the farmhouse, country, and cottage decor has never really gone out of style.  We make it fresh and update it for our lives today.  It is ever-evolving, just like life.

Color Palette

The American Farmhouse has a soft, worn patina.  No bold colors.  Often paint is worn off showing layers in some cases even down to the wood.

Farmhouse Flavors

On my grandparents’ farm, there was an abundance of fruit.  They had an orchard full of pears, apples, and raspberries!

Farmhouse flavors are fresh and hearty.

Design Elements

Today, barn doors aren’t just for barns anymore.  They have been hot hot hot for a while now &  I’ve seen them everywhere.  We continue to bring the outside in, possibly to enlarge our spaces by opening them to a bigger expanse.  Barn doors look great in reclaimed wood with crossbars as the hallmark for the American Farmhouse door.  A modern update is to see them painted smoothly with all colors.  It creates a separation where a door may not have room to swing, such as a pocket door once was.  Or where a bypass door has fallen off its hinge one too many times.

Farm house by Joanna Gaines

We can’t look at the Farmhouse without mentioning Joanna Gaines.  The past 5 years she has taken over HGTV flipping old homes in Waco and giving them a modern fresh update that holds true to its Farmhouse roots.

In case you didn’t know the Farm house sign will remind you that this is Farm house style. The painted furniture has been sanded and waxed to show its age. The color palette is muted & soft. Via homecoachusa

Aroma

Out in the country, the air is so fresh and clean, there’s nothing like it anywhere.  Wildflowers are as far as the eye can see.  So when I think of scents that belong with the farmhouse style, I am reminded of sweet flowers with their perfume that fills the air.  Red and pink Geraniums bring a humble pop of color.  I would have liked to have stayed true to the mood boards theme of Sunflower however, they don’t have a scent that you can put in a bottle, but I gave you the next best thing in Geranium.

Uses

  • Use in an aromatherapy steam facial to beautify skin.

  • Add a drop to your moisturizer for a smoothing effect.

  • Geranium is great for both dry and oily hair. Apply a few drops to your shampoo or conditioner bottle, or make your own deep hair conditioner.

  • Diffuse aromatically for a calming effect.

Isn’t this diffuser from Macy’s so cute!
