Coastal Grandma

History of Coastal Style

Inspiration comes from the Hamptons on Long Island, New York.  The style is like the people; sophisticated, classic yet relaxed and casual all at the same time.

Color Palette

Design Characteristics

  • Lofty Ceilings with beams

  • Large picture windows to let in abundant light and beachy views framed with sheer fabric drapery

  • Cane or Wicker furniture

  • Modern furniture has incorporated Cerused Oak, which is grayed in nature.

  • Flooring is mostly rustic hardwood or even painted.

  • Area Rugs are of a natural fiber such as sisal, jute, or grass. If they have a color or pattern most commonly seen is a wide stripe that has a casual feel

  • Furniture upholstered in linen fabrics

  • Instead of Chandeliers, Lantern-style pendants are typical.

  • Blue and White Ginger jars

  • Grandmothers have lovely touches that make a house a home: Flowers in vases, herbs on the window sill, candles lit.

Inspired Styles & Designs

via curated Kravet

I first became acquainted with Mably Handler at my local Kravet Showroom. Her sophisticated yet relaxed palette creates easy living at its best. The Cerused (or Limed, as my mother called it) Oak reads soft and the grain doesn’t shout at you. Brass is common in Hampton Style, but this brushed brass brackets on the ottoman are quite nice. Inspired by the Hampton Style, this living room also has a decidedly modern feel with the blue batik circle fabric on the comfy chairs. A peaked ceiling with windows bring in the clear blue sky also brings your eye up the massive orb chandelier.

Mark Hampton’s living room made me want to open up the windows let the gentle sea breeze in and listen to the waves. Then get a fluffy blanket and take a lazy day summer nap. There is something so absolutely calming about the palette and and richness of texture. The almost periwinkle end of this blue hue doesn’t hurt either. Mark’s experienced design brings in just enough other colors to keep this design interesting. Notice the vase in the corner of pink cherry blossoms, and touches of green scattered throughout.

This kitchen is so timeless and classic looking. The bell jar glass lantern is what caught my eye.

This kitchen just screamed quality to me. The custom work and massive corbel on the island and at the stove give a sense of permanence. The ogee trimmed wood countertop on the island glow to a beautiful shine. Good up and notice the triple POW of the globe pendants trimmed in brass. The simple details that come together form a lasting design.

Symmetry plays an important part in making this bedroom work. No fussy rug needed or need to redo the floors. These floors have the charm of being her a very long time. Instead of ripping them out they relied on paint to bring a fresh transformation.
