Announcing… The 2023 Color of the Year
Welcome my Design Aficionado!
Happy Autumn! Grab a hot apple cider and have a seat. Let’s talk color of the year 2023!
Some things are timeless and some things are cyclical and some things are personal. Color can be all three, but only when everything lines up are they all three. Each year each major brand of paint pours over all the colors, what has been trending, what we are tired of, and what we long for to be fresh. This group of experts narrow it down and narrow it down until they get the newest trending color.
Every Autumn they reveal what will be the newest color that we will flock to put in our homes. In Autumn 2021 all four major brands; Behr, Sherwin Williams, PPG, and Benjamin Moore; introduced a form of sage green. In all my years tracking the COTY, I have not seen this done. Most years I don’t see people embrace what the companies think we will adore. However, I definitely saw an increase in this color everywhere. What a refreshing break from the whites I had been seeing.
About the time the kiddos head back to school, I begin to wonder what the powers that be will decide the direction that their marketing ought to go. With last years swing toward the greens this year they made a surprising choice. They were the first company to reveal their “color,” Blank Canvas DC-003. It is a warm-toned white, creamy without reading yellow and more artisanal than sterile. Behr’s VP of Color and Creative Services, Erika Woelfel, told Architectural Digest, “that as we begin to think about 2023, it is more about a fresh start.” Maybe she’s right. After a couple of years of living in a pandemic, President Biden has just announced that the pandemic is over. We are ready for a fresh start. A blank canvas that we can begin to paint our life and our environment on.
This kitchen is so soft and serene. It really is a Blank Canvas!
Next in the lineup is Sherwin Williams
They have announced on the last day of summer, sniff sniff, that Redend Point is its Color of the Year 2023. The “blush beige with subtle pink undertones represents warmth and empathy.”
House Beautiful reports that Sue Wadden, director of Color Marketing at Sherwin Williams hopes that “this color inspires people to think about neutrals differently, a neutral doesn’t necessarily have to white, beige or gray; it can be a color or have colorful undertones, such as pink. It’s all about how you use it in a space.”
Don’t just paint your walls, paint your cabinetry for a bold touch! Don’t let a little color scare you; here are many timeless finishes that complement Redend Point. Oh so pretty! It makes me love this color even more to look at these pictures.
If you have been following me for a while you know that I prefer Benjamin Moore. But color and the trends are exciting no matter the brand, aren’t they? They have not pulled back the curtain yet on their choice yet, but I know this will whet your appetite for what is to come. Count down with me for Benjamin Moore COTY 2023 until Wednesday, October 12, 2023!
Color can be used anywhere! Cabinets, like I’ve shown you here, on your walls, ceiling, and furniture. But every project needs a plan to succeed. Don’t get stuck in limbo because you don’t know where to start. One of the first steps is deciding what style and color palette you want for your home. Using the Palette Plus system within the design quiz helps you make those first steps.
Make it classic. Make it timeless. Make it elegant and most of all, make it you!
