Renovation Update

Hi There Design Aficionados!

For the past year, I have been putting blood sweat, and tears, into an early 1900s that needed a lot of love. Since the start, we have really polished this gem.

The previous owners had partially demo-ed the interior. It had rooms that were pretty rough. See the tour here. The outside was alright, but it needed freshening up. This determined that the inside would get our time, attention, and dollars upfront. So, I began on the overall design, and Mr. Man got busy finishing the demo, gathering supplies, and the help.

Behind the scenes necessities…

He made sure all systems were in order. This included: new electrical, plumbing, ductwork, insulation, and chimney repairs. This part of the process is time-consuming, but not very exciting. Regardless, the upgrades are ‘oh so necessary.

We proceeded to drywall and paint. I finally started to see it come together. The excitement set in, and I remembered how a space transforms with color. Like a kid in a candy shop, I was almost giddy.

Looking forward…

In the last month, the time had come for what I was most looking forward to antique hardwood flooring. When we first bought the house, a room had the hardwood missing, and with a long eye-line from the door to the back of the house, the hardwood needed to fill all the floors for a cohesive look. This home was built in 1911, and these floors are original to the building. These narrow and unique red oak planks were going to be tough to replicate. But, we found a supplier. Whew! Then, in order to marry the old with the new, it needed to be sanded and finished. It looked ‘mahvelous dahling’! I can’t wait to show you! But I will soon. I promise.

With the weather beginning to turn to fall and winter, it was time to finish up the exterior of our little home.

Curb Appeal Refresh

Brick homes are regal yet inviting at the same time. To me, a terracotta brick home is particularly beautiful. All over small Midwest towns have the same color scheme and style. The fascia and soffit, the gutter detailings, are a dark bronze. And the window trim is cream. This is the foundation for the color palette.

The front door was given a new color, a soft sage green from brown. This creates a more welcoming facade. The arched door included hammered bronze hardware, which will remain. A wooden deck railing was painted cream to blend with the window trim instead of the house. The bit of contrast provided makes the entrance more of a feature. This little mini-makeover to the entrance welcomes in those who just pop in for a bit.

To remind you of what it looked like before…

A tired and worn entrance but with good bones

Front door curb appeal

We think that the Curb Appeal refresh on our renovation is much more inviting and welcoming.

Defining your foundational design style is the one of the first building blocks to creating your dream home. A home that you are comfortable in. That serves you. A home that supports your flourishing. Getting these first building blocks in place can be a daunting task. There are so may choices.

If you find your self scrolling thru social media and liking most everything it can be difficult to determine what elements that speak to you.

My DESIGN STYLE QUIZ can help. It's different than most quizzes. It's more than a simple "what's my style." It's chock full of things to excite your senses. This is Panache, after all. It frees you up so that you can flourish in your home. That is what my philosophy is really. Your home ought to support your flourishing.

Blessings!

Fran
