Joy

When you walk into a beautiful home design boutique what do you feel?

If you are like me you experience joy when experiencing the world around you. I recall years ago, entering thru the door of a local home decor retail shop I cried.

It was clean, organized, and filled with fine linens and furnishings. As I walked around

I’ve been reading the book, Joyful by Ingrid Fetell Lee. Upon reading the introduction, this book had me. The author, Ingrid, asks the question “How do tangible things create an intangible feeling of joy?”

Countless studies link our surroundings to our mental health. As women, we are 20% more vulnerable to spikes in our cortisol than men when surrounded by clutter. Yikes! No wonder I long to organize all the time.

Recently, we adopted a kitten, Peanut, because having a pet adds so much joy to our life. He challenges me to stop what I am doing and spend time with him. One evening Peanut was particularly rambunctious. Instead of scolding him for his natural behavior, I sat down on the floor and engaged with Peanut and his toy. As Peanut purred loudly and gave head buts, I knew I had returned the joy he gave me. That connection with Peanut brought out the best in each of us. What a wonderful feeling!

A few years ago, I was feeling the effects of an empty nester and knew the power of music in my soul. I had received an Echo for Christmas and decided to put it to use. And you know me I love a routine and rhythm to life. I programmed so much music that it filled the whole day. Every genre that suited the time of day. Praise in the morning, Beatles to energize me for the day ahead and ending the day with calming classical music. That one ordinary decision had a profound affect. When I walk in the door I am greeted with music, and now Peanut.

That retail store was like a gateway drug. Longing to go back to that feeling in my own home. Creating the calm, peaceful environment that was a feast for the eyes. I want that feeling for you too.

Daily we can create joy in the ordinary. Color is the vehicle for me. A color scheme that is cohesive to the way my family lives and feels. It’s personal to you. What colors give you joy?
